District 5-4A football Breakdown |
|
In early February, the University Interscholastic League realigned the districts for the 2008-2010 school years based on school enrollment. With distant Sherman and Denison moving much closer to home to compete in the newly aligned District 9-4A and the UIL's announcement of four teams from each district advancing to the playoffs, change is everywhere for Wichita Falls High.
While Sherman and Denison were certainly formidable opponents, the addition of former 5A program The Colony, a beefier, more experienced Denton Guyer team and the additions of successful Lake Dallas and Little Elm, 5-4A can definitely make a case as being one of the toughest 4A football districts in Texas High School Football. Below is a summary of each team including last years overall record and enrollment figures to determine who will play Division I and who will play Division II in next winters playoffs.
School
| Last Years Record
| Enrollment Figures
| Description
| | Lewisville The Colony | 4-6
| 2003
| The Colony struggled in their 2007 campaign finishing 4-6 and missing the playoffs in a district that included 5-4A newcomers Little Elm and Lake Dallas. The Colony split games with them, defeating Lake Dallas 22-20 and falling to Little Elm 42-15. Despite their struggles, the Cougars are just a few years past their 5A heyday and still have the athletes to compete.
| Denton Guyer
| 1-9
| 1994.5
| Last year, Guyer nabbed their first win in their short school history after defeating cross-town program Denton High in 31-14 blowout fashion. Guyer returns a beefy offensive front, led by highly touted, 335 pound Senior Greg Hall.
| Denton Ryan
| 6-5
| 1811
| Last season was an un-Ryanesque year as the Raiders finished just above .500. Despite the record, it is worth mention that the three of their losses were pre-district matchups against 5A playoff teams (Colleyville Heritage, Arlington Bowie and Abilene), the other two were to 4A powers Rider and Keller Fossil Ridge. Fossil Ridge was moved back up to 5A after a two-year stint at 4A. It is still to be determined whether or not the opening of Guyer has diluted the talent at Ryan and whether or not the Raiders can right the ship. | | Wichita Falls Rider | 12-2 | 1747 | Wielding some of the top talent in Texas last season, the Raiders had one of the most memorable seasons in school history after avenging previous season losses to Denton Ryan and an earlier loss to 4A power Stephenville in the postseason. With a great deal returning, the Raiders should once again be the team to beat in district play. | Denton High
| 1-9
| 1479 | Denton High won their first game of the season last year and then lost nine straight, also handing Denton Guyer their first win in the entire schools varsity football history. With the majority of the talent in South Denton and the addition of more competitive teams, the early odds will be stacked against the Broncos. | Wichita Falls High
| 8-4
| 1468 | In head coach Travis Pride's second year, the program continued their upward progression by earning a second straight trip to the playoffs, a much improved record and avenged their 2006 first round playoff loss to Birdville in the first round in 2007 by defeating the Hawks 31-27 at Memorial Stadium. With the graduation of Division I receiver (Oklahoma State) Isiah Anderson, Antwone Moore looks to be the point man with the Coyotes aerial assault. | Little Elm
| 8-2
| 1323 | With offensive centerpiece and Lobos quarterback Cole Beasley gone to graduation, the certainty of next season is still in question. Despite their remarkable 8-2 record in a competitive 4A district in 2007, the Lobos did not make the playoffs. | Lake Dallas
| 9-2
| 1126
| Being a small 4A program and just a stones throw away from Guyer high, the Falcons soared in to the playoffs last season and beat some very good teams along the way. Lake Dallas owned victories over talented Red Oak and surging McKinney Boyd before a one touchdown loss to a very good West Mesquite team in the first round. | |
